DESOLATE BEACH.
This collection was produced in responce to a breif set by the 'Royal Society Birmingham Artist Gallery' (RBSA) where the items were on didplay as part of their 'By the sea' themed exhibition.
Frequently in my artwork I attempt to capture the essence of an environment . My ‘Beach Collection’ encompasses this ideal. For this collection I drew inspiration from a desolate beach I know well in mid Wales, from which the majority of the materials were gathered. Using these materials I have tried to convey the bleak yet beautiful atmosphere.
The clearly visible joining methods of metal bars and tubes in many of my pieces are intended as a subtle reference to human attempts to control the environment. The beach was strewn with the failed and on going efforts to prevent it being washed away. It’s as if nature wants to take it away from us and all we can do to prevent it is a futile attempt to bolt everything down.
